Root Canal Basics

What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a procedure that helps you retain the function of your tooth. The innermost portion of your tooth contains blood vessels and nerves that can become inflamed or infected. When this happens, a root canal may be needed. In such situations, Dr. Shnaydman will make an opening in the crown of the tooth, clean out any infection, fill it with a material called Gutta Percha, and seal it. If all goes well, and the tooth continues to be properly cared for, it can function for many years.

Is a Root Canal Painful?

A root canal is no more uncomfortable than a routine dental procedure such as having a cavity filled. With advances in anesthesia and Blackstone Endodontics' state-of-the-art technology, in most cases a root canal can be completed efficiently and comfortably. The truth is, pain from infection and swelling that leads to the need for a root canal is far more difficult to tolerate than the procedure itself.

Do I Need a Root Canal?

The definitive way to tell whether you need a root canal is to visit your general dentist or make an appointment to be examined by Dr. Shnaydman here at Blackstone Endodontics. Some indications that you may need a root canal are pain while biting down, sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers, a cracked or chipped tooth, swollen gums, etc.

Will My Insurance Pay for a Root Canal?

Many dental insurances do cover part or all of the cost of a root canal. However, the only real way to tell is to check with your dental insurance company. We at Blackstone Endodontics may be able to help communicate with your insurer, so please feel free to reach out to us with any questions at 401-405-4411.
